Howard Thorne is a rapist in Los Angeles: he meets women at work and at
parties or he sees them walking down the street, and he follows them,
terrifies them, and assaults them. He also dreams about these assaults,
and he's unclear how much of what he's done is real and how much is
fantasy. He ignores his heroin-using wife, Vicki, who tries everything
she can think of to get his sexual attention. Howard and Vicki go
separately to a costume party where she learns the full truth about his
nature and where he is stalked by one of his recent victims.
Individualized versions of Hell await Howard and Vicki.
Directed with brisk efficiency by Jack Hill and John Lamb, with
a constant snappy pace, a tight script written by Hill, a marvelously
groovy'n'jazzy score by the Psychedelic Psymphonette, a tantalizingly
tawdry behind-the-scenes glimpse at the whole subterranean smut racket,
lots of sumptuous bare distaff skin on display, crisp black and white
cinematography, a gloriously decadent anything-goes climactic swingers
orgy, a compact 76 minute running time, stone sober narration, a
provocative subtext that explores the fine line between fantasy and
reality, a dizzying sense of frenzied all-out dementia, and a
terrifically surreal nightmare sequence (Howard gets attacked in a pool
by a bunch of ferocious women who hiss like mad cats!), this
sensationally screwy soft-core oddity totally delivers the immensely
entertaining trashy goods. The kinky nocturnal netherworld of crazy
carnal kicks and forbidden passions adds an extra funky flavor to the
racy proceedings. Delectable blonde Adele Rein supplies a yummy eyeful
as Howard's nutty, frustrated, neglected wife Vicky. (None other than
late, great cult actress Luana Anders supplies the voice of Vicky!). A
beautifully bent, batty and berserk one-of-a-kind oddball treat.
