Hiroshi Teshigahara has always had a distinct way of expressing loneliness in his films. This sci-fi feature is a riveting film that does just that and puts you into a grim world that you oddly want to experience yourself.

The premise, roughly in the same vein as 1997's Abre los ojos, tells the story of Okuyama, a married man who longs for happiness as he has been tormented by the public for his disfigured face. His doctor finally has an alternative for him -- a lifelike mask that will be molded to the face that he's always dreamed of. Once he does this, the possibilities of how to utilize his new face become endless.

Hauntingly directed, it's s a realistic depiction of the future as it feels desolate and empty (in a good way). No flying cars, no lasers, no retina-scanning doors. It's devoid of all visual effects... just good old fashion awe-inspired art-direction.

A film that deals greatly with the human condition, it's of great character study. The legendary Tatsuya Nakadai is fantastic and subtle as the lead and doesn't let the mask that he wears throughout the majority of the film hinder his performance.

The overall feeling or mood of the film is reason enough to watch this utterly fascinating and original film.
