A 'mockumentary' hosted by Dr. Francis B. Gross, a coroner. He is trying to show you the different 'faces' of people while dying. There are faked scenes of people getting killed intermixed with footage of real accidents. There are executions by decapitation (in an unknown Arab country) and the electric chair. One scene shows a group of tourists in Egypt smashing a monkey's head while still alive and eating its brains. There are shots of animals eating people and Satanic orgies using dead bodies. There is a segment that deals with an alligator that accidentally entered 'residential' waters. The local warden goes in his boat to get the alligator back into the sea when he accidentally falls over and becomes gator bait. The film ends with newsreel footage of people jumping off buildings and major accidents.

  1. One of the original 39 Video nasties Banned and prosecuted in the UK in 1981. Eventually released in 2003 after 2.19 worth of cuts due to animal cruelty. If this film could pass their "standards" with only 2.30 worth of slashing, well, what film could not. Not a slam, this is a classic which spanned two sequels and remember seeing it for the first time in 1980 at a mates video store, after closing, blew me away, in an oddly fantastic way. I could have done w/o the Asian Monkey restaurant though, scarred still.

Don't worry, the monkey is fake :)

I humbly bow to your amazing bredth of film knowledge, seriously, but if it was, WOW! Either amazing special effects, or, well, it could be never having watched it in the clearest of mind. Don't tell me it was really one of those old wind up monkeys banging cymbals together, I hope I was not that far gone.
    PS...KUDOS mDiD!

The first time I watched Faces of Death (in the eighties) this scene shocked me, then when I re-discovered it a few years later, my first reaction was like "wow, this is so fake!" (hopefully).

The staging is very mondo-esque, they beat a live monkey with fake hammers (with agressive zooms and editing) then they cut a rubber monkey head (that doesn't look like the live monkey) and eat what's inside.

In fact, most of the scenes are staged. If I remember correctly, they talk about it in the book Killing for Culture.
