Egyptian caterer busies himself collecting body parts from young maidens in order to bring Ishtar, an ancient goddess of good and evil back to life. When he has prepared enough parts for the ceremony, he hypnotizes a woman giving an engagement party for her daughter, at which he plans to perform the ancient rites of summons, using the daughter as his final sacrifice.

Often credited as the first traditional "gore" pic, 'Blood Feast' establishes all of typical conventions of the genre; including nubile, young women (including a Playboy Playmate), excessive blood and guts, and even some dark humor (including the "hamburger" line and the trash-compactor ending). It's also inept in every way, from the atrocious acting and horrible directing to the dumb-as-dirt characters.

  1. This film, by one of my heroes of cinema, was one of the 39 Video nasty's prosecuted post 1983 in the UK, thanks largely to Mary Whitehouse's moral objection. Not officially released in the UK without 23 seconds cut in 2001. Not officially Re-released uncut until 2005.

thank you very much, it's so interesting to re-explore hershel gordon lewis 50 years after, in the age of walking dead and guillermo del toro's horror, and god have these movies aged well. They still offer something fresh however much they have inspired others.
