A soldier from Earth crashlands on an alien world after sustaining battle damage. Eventually he encounters another survivor, but from the enemy species he was fighting; they band together to survive on this hostile world. In the end the human finds himself caring for his enemy in a completely unexpected way.

Director Wolfgang Petersen, working from a thoughtful, witty and intelligent script by Edward Khmara, expertly crafts a touching and absorbing tale about friendship, tolerance, understanding and responsibility that neatly blends elements of humor, action and even pathos into a very solid and satisfying whole. The film further benefits from the stellar acting from the two well-matched leads: Quaid brings an appealingly rough and sardonic charm to Davidge while Gossett, Jr. as the hermaphroditic Jeriba projects an extremely warm and likable personality through all his heavy make-up. Nice supporting turns by Brion James as vicious slave trader outlaw minor Stubbs, Bumper Robinson as Jeriba's sweet Draco son Zammis, and Lance Kerwin as Davidge's ill-fated co-pilot Joey Wooster. Kudos are also in order for Tony Imi's polished cinematography and Maurice Jarre's lush, rich, rousing orchestral score.

The lavish special effects and breathtakingly impressive production design are both impressive and convincing, but what makes this picture so notable and endearing is the wealth of heart it offers amid all the admittedly nifty pyrotechnics. A really sound and entertaining winner.
