Le Printemps, the third film in Hanoun's 'Four Seasons' series, is perhaps the best known of them; which isn't saying much, considering that all four films were more or less impossible to see for the better part of half a century.

Hanoun's stuff tends to be pretty challenging, and Le Printemps is no exception. It features two parallel plotlines that never intersect: the first is about a young girl who is going through puberty and lives with her grandmother; the second is basically Michael Lonsdale running through a forest, trying to catch fish with his bare hands, etc. Perhaps he is her father; perhaps he is a murderer; perhaps he is merely a character that she has imagined.

Beyond its own radical aesthetic, Le Printemps is interesting for another reason: it was co-scripted by Catherine Binet, who also plays a minor role in the film as a woman on horseback. Binet was the partner of Georges Perec, and had a brief but brilliant career in cinema: alongside a couple of documentaries, she only directed one feature film, The Games of Countess Dolingen, a similarly enigmatic work that touches on a lot of common themes – layered narratives, death, puberty – and also features Michael Lonsdale in a central role. (Also, the same broken fragment of a doll's face shows up in both films, weirdly enough...) If you admire that film, this is about the only other experience of Binet's singular vision you'll get. One hopes that, sometime in the future, she'll get the recognition she missed out on in her lifetime.
