An archaelogical expedition brings back the coffin of an Egyptian queen known for her magic powers to London. Her spirit takes on the shape of a young girl and strange things starts to happen.

One of Hammer Films best movies, and one of the best mummy movies ever made, this is an extremely creepy, disconcerting, well-directed film.

Based on Bram Stoker's book The Jewel Of The Seven Stars (later filmed again as The Awakening), it slowly generates enigma and confusion by not introducing any of the characters and telling the story out of time-sequence to great unsettling effect. Leon is sensational in the dual role of Margaret / Tera, a voluptuous Hammer beauty with pool-blue eyes and raven hair, exuding both sensuality and innocence.

The shots of her wandering the house in the obligatory black diaphanous nightgown are classic Hammer iconography and guaranteed to put starch in a man's strides. The supporting cast are good, particularly Villiers as the power-hungry Corbeck, and Arthur Grant's photography is superb.

Sadly, just prior to the end of shooting, talented filmmaker Holt died of heart failure, and the movie was completed by Hammer boss Michael Carreras. Trivia - Edwards' character, Tod Browning, is named after the great director of the classic 1931 production of Dracula.
