A demonic reincarnation of a Japanese general from the 10th century appears in the early 20th century Tokyo with a mission to destroy the blooming city.

* Creature designs by H. R. Giger of ALIEN fame

* The biggest box office success for director Akio Jissoji during his career, renowned for his work on the classic ULTRAMAN and ULTRA-Q series

* Third highest grossing Japanese film of 1988 and 8th highest grossing film in Japan overall of that year.

* One of the most expensive Japanese fantasy films to have been produced around that time period, with a budget of over 1 Billion yen.

* Served as a stepping stone for the careers of SPFX artists Shinji Higuchi and Tomoo Haraguchi, both renowned for their work on the Heisei GAMERA trilogy and of course (in Higuchi's case) one of the creative minds behind the new Toho GODZILLA film. In fact, it was Shinji Higuchi who designed the new cover art for this Blu-Ray box set, showing that he still remembers the movie.

* First giant success for producer Takashige Ichise, the successful producer who funded a huge number of films in the J-Horror boom, including RINGU, JU-ON, DARK WATER, as well as their respective Hollywood remakes

* First big Japanese motion picture to visualize several mythical tropes now common in Japanese fantasy media, such as onmyodo magic, shikigami, feng shui magic, and Qimen Dunjia magic. Likewise the movie paved the way for Yojiro Takita's popular ONMYOJI films released in 2001 and 2003.

* Introduced Japanese viewers to Kyusaku Shimada's Yasunori Kato, a now-iconic villain in Japanese pop culture who directly inspired M. Bison of STREET FIGHTER fame and Raidou Kuzunoha of the SHIN MEGAMI TENSEI video game franchise. The character would also reappear as the villain of Takashi Miike's 2005 fantasy film THE GREAT YOKAI WAR.
