Inspector Gallien is investigating the rape and murder of two little girls. The only suspect is attorney Jerome Martinaud, but the evidence against him is circumstantial. As the city celebrates New Year's Eve, Gallien calls Martinaud to his office and interrogates him for hour after hour while Martinaud continues to maintain his innocence. We learn all about the evidence; we meet Martinaud's wife and learn all about the rift between the two; but will we, and Gallien, finally learn whether Martinaud is guilty?

For those unacquainted with french cinema, this is a masterpiece. Dialogues beautifully crafted by Michel Audiard, who is an household name in France, it is first and foremost a duel between two of the best ever actors of french cinema Lino Ventura and Michel Serrault who manage to create a massive suspens from what is essentially an ongoing, and apparently civilized conversation between two reasonable individuals. But the one actor who steals the show is Guy Marchand in a meltdown scene you won't forget. Go for it without hesitation and thank you so much to MDID for posting this great copy.
