A soldier in the Mexican-American war in 1847 is promoted to captain for his perceived bravery but is soon transferred to a remote outpost in the Sierra Nevadas when the cowardly truth becomes evident. The outpost's keepers seem on the brink of madness in their own ways, and what passes for their tranquility is shattered by the intrusion of the lone survivor of an ill-fated expedition that ended in murder and cannibalism.

Antonia Bird's "Ravenous" is one of the finest low-budget horror movies of recent years. It's a brilliant mix of cannibalism, gruesome gore, sly black humour and quasi-philosophy. The script by Ted Griffin is absolutely stupendous. It's an irresistible blend of Native American legend (you absorb the strength or spirit of who you eat), the Donner tragedy, and the story of Sawney Bean.
