The elderly bat researcher, professor Abronsius and his assistant,
Alfred, go to a remote Transylvanian village looking for vampires.
Alfred falls in love with the inn-keeper's young daughter Sarah.
However, she has been spotted by the mysterious count Krolock who lives
in a dark and creepy castle outside the village...
This vampire movie remains one of the neck-biting genre's highest
peaks. It's delightful combination of Hammer-style horror and broad
humor makes it a joy from start to finish. While there are enough
laughs to keep a smile on your face, the scare-factor is also
competent, with enough effective chills to please even the most
die-hard horror fans.
Drenched in an atmosphere that's undeniably Baroque, Roman Polanski's effective tour-de-force is also beautiful, with gorgeous cinematography of the surrounding forests and mountains. The last set piece, a notable scene set in the castle's ballroom, has to be seen to be believed.
